Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Courses for Healthcare Professionals

Intermediate Life Support (ILS) training is designed to support healthcare professionals in recognising and responding to acutely unwell patients. It builds on Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, introducing structured patient assessment, team-based resuscitation, and more advanced clinical decision-making.

Each course is accredited by the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK), ensuring nationally recognised training aligned with current resuscitation guidelines and emergency care standards.

Training is delivered by experienced clinicians who bring frontline insight into every session, helping bridge the gap between theory and real-world practice.

Our Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Courses

RCUK-accredited Intermediate Life Support courses are designed for healthcare professionals who need the skills to assess, manage and respond to deteriorating patients in clinical and emergency settings.

These courses build on Basic Life Support (BLS) training and are ideal for clinicians requiring a more advanced, team-based approach to emergency care.

Who Should Take ILS Courses?

These courses are suitable for healthcare professionals involved in patient care, particularly those working in acute, clinical, or emergency environments.

Ideal for:

  • Doctors, Nurses, and midwives
  • Physiotherapists and paramedics
  • Dentists and dental care teams
  • Operating department practitioners
  • Allied health professionals working in clinical or emergency settings

If you are responsible for assessing or managing deteriorating patients, Intermediate Life Support training will strengthen your clinical confidence and response capability.

Assessment & Learning Outcomes

Each course combines theory, hands-on skills, and scenario-based training designed to reflect real clinical situations.

Participants are assessed through:

  • Continuous instructor feedback
  • Practical demonstrations
  • Team-based simulation exercises

On completion, learners will be able to:

  • Apply structured patient assessment techniques
  • Recognise and respond to clinical deterioration
  • Participate effectively in team-based resuscitation
  • Use defibrillators and airway management techniques safely
  • Communicate clearly under pressure

How ILS Differs from Basic Life Support (BLS)

Intermediate Life Support training builds on the core principles of Basic Life Support by introducing structured clinical assessment, advanced airway management, and team-based emergency response. While BLS focuses on immediate life-saving actions such as CPR and AED use, ILS prepares healthcare professionals to manage more complex and evolving clinical situations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intermediate Life Support (ILS) Training

An Intermediate Life Support (ILS) course, approved by the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK), provides healthcare professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to recognise and manage patient deterioration and medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest.

Our ILS courses are designed for registered healthcare professionals who may be required to respond to or lead in medical emergencies. This typically includes Nurses, doctors, paramedics, operating department practitioners, dentists, and other clinicians. The course is also suitable for senior students looking to develop their clinical emergency care skills.

An ILS certification demonstrates that you are trained to manage emergency situations safely and effectively in line with RCUK guidance. It helps improve patient outcomes, supports clinical governance, and is often a requirement for working in acute, hospital, community, or dental settings.

ILS certification is normally valid for one year. To maintain competency and keep up to date with current RCUK guidelines, we recommend attending an ILS recertification course before your certificate expires.

Assessment is through continuous observation and structured scenarios. Participants are assessed against the RCUK learning outcomes, including practical resuscitation skills, ABCDE assessment, teamwork, and communication during emergencies.

We recommend that learners already hold a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate or equivalent experience in clinical practice. If you are unsure whether you meet the entry requirements, please contact our team and we’ll be happy to advise.

We can deliver ILS training at your workplace for groups, or at selected training venues depending on demand. Please contact us to discuss on-site training or upcoming course dates.
